The 18b Las Vegas Arts District Neighborhood Association has officially opposed the initiative to establish a Business Improvement District (BID) in the Arts District, raising alarms over potential impacts on affordability for local residents and businesses. The board articulated its stance via a Facebook post, emphasizing that their support for improvements like safer streets and cleaner spaces should align with the needs of the artists and small enterprises that have contributed to the district’s character.
According to the proposal, the BID would be funded by assessments from property owners to cover services that exceed standard city offerings, addressing safety, cleanliness, and marketing within a defined geographic area. The association warned that the BID could lead to gentrification, threatening to displace the community that has built the neighborhood and lack protections against rising costs that would affect low-income residents and small business owners.
